Almost 20,000 people pour into Nevada’s Black Rock Desert each year for the countercultural jubilee with community principles that include leaving no trace in the terrain and guarding social networks and public spaces.
The unforeseen swell in callers to the desert has been a boon for tourism in municipalities in Nevada and California, but it has also come at a cost. For a long time, residents of metropolises similar to Reno have complained about the dust-covered trash left behind by burners and businesses. An original sheriff once said, " Burning Man brings nothing to Pershing County except for heartbreak."

Now the latest complaint is coming from Lake Tahoe. While the lake region is more than two hours from the desert, visitors to the remote region of the American west frequently pass through Reno and Lake Tahoe. This week, business owners and officers in the Lake Tahoe city of Truckee told SFGate festivalgoers had immorally ditched their trash in the area.

"What I ’ve seen are large construction bags of trash, alcohol bottles, tones of food, canopies and large aluminum poles from shade structures," an original carwash proprietor told a shooter with the outlet. " People just discharge their motor homes. I ’ve seen people occasionally spend four to six hours pulling everything out of their vehicles, also washing their buses and their things. One trailer can fill up half of my capacity."
A megacity council member told the outlet that after the jubilee " RVs frequently fill the dumpsters with everything from canopies, shade structures and other trash that is n’t your normal camping trash ".

Truckee has introduced some parking restrictions in part due to trash, noise and camping on jetties associated with jubilee attendees, the outlet reported. The jubilee expects callers to clean up after themselves, but that has posed challenges. In 2018, the US Bureau of Land Management told organizers that they had left too important trash after that time’s event. Business possessors from Utah to California have complained about waste left by jubilee attendees.
" Some people, when they leave, they just throw it off the road. They do n’t want to pay, so they just throw( it) off the road," Athena Lame bull, who runs a disposal point in northern Nevada, told KUNR in 2019.
The jubilee has prompted guests to duly dispose of their trash and not leave it on roadways. " Not only is litter reckless and expensive in terms of energy, time, and plutocracy for others, it's also illegal and reflects veritably poorly on Burning Man," organizers said on Twitter.
Most people who attend Burning Man abide by the rules, SFGate points out, and municipalities like Truckee have said they're thankful for the increase in callers and support for original businesses.

This time marked the first functionary Burning Man jubilee since 2019 after organizers cancelled the event two times in a row due to COVID. Last summer, an event in the desert dubbed a " deserter" Burning Man drew more than 4,000 people and a review from original law enforcement officers. Attendees this time endured a huge dust storm during the jubilee and a more than nine-hour delay as they left.
